Every Other Day Fasting (EODF)

EODF fasting typically has the user abstain from all food and beverages except for water for 1 day then eat normally the next day. Depending on when the last meal is eaten the fasting times can vary from 36 – 48 hours.

Study 1 [1][2]

Study Setup:

  • 60 people 4 weeks
  • Calorie Restriction of 35%
  • 36 hours fast – 12 hours unlimited

Findings:

  • Down-regulation of Amino Acid (methoine) – Lower proteins = good
  • Increase of Ketone bodies
    • BHB – protective in many diseases
    • possibly linked to longevity [7]
  • Lowered levels of triiodothyronine – (thyroid hormone)
    • Possibly linked to longevity [6]
  • Lowered Cholesterol
  • Lowered belly fat
    • 3.5kg (7.7 lbs) lower weight
  • After 6 months the immune system was stable
  • Useful for combating inflammation
    • Reduced sICAM-1 – (marker that is linked to inflammation)

Study 2: [8]

Study Setup:

  • 20 Mice with and without autoimmune disorders (EAE) split into 2 groups for 4 weeks
    • EODF
    • Ate whenever they wanted (Ad libtum)
  • 16 people with relapsed multiple sclerosis (MS) split into two groups for two weeks:
    • EODF
    • Ad libtum

Findings:

CNS – Central nervous system – Brain and spinal cord
Leptin – Hormone that makes you feel full
Adiponectin – helps regulate sugars and fat
Adipose tissue – Fat cells
T reg cells and Th17 cells – Cells in the immune system
Microbial Diversity – Bacteria that reside in the gut
Demyelination – decay of thinking and memory
  • Lower Leptin
    • Increased appetite (duh)
  • Higher Adiponeticin
    • lowers risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome
    • generally low in obese people
  • Higher T reg cells (Supressor T Cells) [3]
    • Modulate the immune system
    • Prevent autoimmune disease
    • Fasting increased white blood cells in humans
  • Lower Th17 cells – [4]
    • pro inflammatory immune cells.
  • Microbial Diversity
    • “a healthy host–microorganism balance must be respected in order to optimally perform metabolic and immune functions and prevent disease development. ” [5]
    • A poor gut biome can play a role in devloping autoimmune diseases
    • The fasting also caused protective changes in the gut
    • Inplanting the microbiome from the IF mice to the Ad libtum mice helped give protection to the autoimmune disease (EAE)
  • Demyelination
    • Myelin is needed for thinking and memory
    • Lowering demyelination is lowering the damage to thinking and memory (due to MS)
  • BHB dramatically increased

Study 3: [3]

Study Setup:

30 mice split into two groups

Findings:

Acetate / Lactate – fermentation products from the gut microbiome
Beiging –

Ameliorates obesity

insulin resistance

hepatic steatosis

Activating brown adipose tissue (BAT) or browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) could be a promising therapy for obesity and related metabolic diseases.

Its generally believed that adult humans to have have active (BAT)

for cold exposure page: “that non-shivering thermogenesis can re-establish energy balance and therefore counter the effects of elevated energy intake”

EODF selectively activates beige fat thermogenesis and ameliorates obesity-related metabolic diseases

Lean mas was unaffected (You don’t lose your gains)

Brown adipose tissue increased and white adipose tissue went down
